What I am Learning from Working Out On a Regular Basis

I have a confession…I really don’t like to work out, but it’s starting to grow on me. They say 21 days makes a habit, right? Well, I’ve passed the 21 day mark and I’m still going. Want to know why? It’s because I feel so much better mentally and physically, therefore, I’m not giving up on myself and I will love it one way or another! This is our family’s “New Kind of Normal.”

Big Wins Don’t Always Mean Weight Loss

First off, I have learned to throw that scale out the window and you should too! Not really, but just tuck it away in a closet somewhere, because all that it does is make you obsess.

So many people get discouraged when the scale only moves a few pounds, but it needs to be stopped! There are many other changes that need to be gauged besides pounds. For instance, I have only lost 15 pounds, but my inches are beginning to melt away. I have lost over 10 inches since January 7th when I began this journey. You definitely don’t want to let your weight guide you, because as you increase muscle, you are losing fat. Muscle is more dense and compact therefore, you will lose inches and feel a heck of a lot better in the mean time. Additionally, muscle is going to help you burn more calories so it’s a win – win situation!

Your success is not about the number! When you are eating healthy and moving, it reduces your risk of chronic disease and puts your cholesterol, insulin, and blood pressure in check.

It’s a Life Altering Change in Your Mindset…At Least Mine

With my monthly PMDD struggles, I had to figure out something different than medication. When I began exercising on a daily basis, I began to notice positive changes.

I am beginning to look at myself differently. I am walking with more confidence. I am more positive about life, and I am much happier during my monthly PMDD struggles. Eating right and exercising is becoming a way of life for my family. It has affected me in such a positive way that no matter how bad I dislike exercising, I will never quit! I will always make that time for me!

What We Do To Work Out

Exercising doesn’t have to be an expensive monthly fee that you pay. It can be something as simple as walking, sit-ups, or push-ups in your living room. Ultimately, it’s up to you! Ask yourself some simple questions:

What do you enjoy?
Do you like going to a gym?
Do you like mall walking?
Do you like having accountability?

You are the only one that can push yourself to eat right, and exercise, but it starts today and it starts with one minute at a time, one inch at a time, one pound at a time!

For my family, we started with a friend at his home gym. He pushes us, he holds us accountable. They are hard workouts, but he taught us to do what we could do and then do a little more. We also began working out at home with Beach Body. There are hundreds of exercising options for all fitness levels, from dancing, yoga, Pilates, hit, and more. There are also so many accountability Facebook groups to help keep you motivated and on track. So, if you are one that likes to be on your own, then that’s a great option!

In addition to their live streaming, they offer great meal plans and Shakeology drinks, which are by far my absolute favorite….especially with some fruit and PB2 in it!

Become More Powerful Than You Think

Your muscles will hurt! You will be tired! You will breathe like you are having a medical emergency! You may even think…someone please call 911! Trust me when I say this, it’s a normal feeling! You are stronger than you think you are. Don’t let your body control you, you control your body. It’s all you, so NEVER give up on yourself! Each time you will get better. You will become stronger! It will become second nature without thinking about it. Feel free to reach out to us. We can all hold each other accountable.

The Reality of PMDD

This video is a true reality of what it is like to live with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. As she stated in the video, each month the individual becomes a prisoner of their own mind. Everything she says is so true and I can relate! More often than not, it’s like I’m a stranger standing outside of my body looking in. The only problem is, it’s like there are chains holding me down and not allowing me to pull away from the evil that lurks inside. I want nothing more than to be the happy person I know I can be, but it feels impossible. Remember, it is temporary and will go away in a few days.

Know that if you struggle with PMDD, you are not alone. Seek help from doctors, family, friends, and support groups. Don’t let it take control! You are stronger than it is.

Why I Journal

I don’t know about you, but I recently began to love journaling. Each day as I focus on my “New Kind of Normal,”  I am becoming a better version of me.

Why I began to Journal

There are things in my life that I struggle with on a daily basis; Kids growing up, severe asthma, heavier weight than I want to be, and the scariest of all is my Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. I have never felt good about myself, my job, my attitude, and my body. I knew I needed a change, so I began tracking how I was feeling each day. As I looked back, there was nothing positive that I was writing about. I decided it was time for a change because I knew that God had blessed my life in so many ways, but I wasn’t appreciating it like I should have.

Journaling has begun to change my life in a positive way. It has helped me on the journey to taking control of my subconscious mind and has helped by making me more aware of my thoughts. It is allowing me be to become my best self!

What do I Write About?

Every person will have their own ideas of what they want to write about in their journal, but when I write, I try to focus on how I can live a better life and what will make me a happier person.   I begin each morning by writing a few affirmations and goals because it gives me a clear vision of where I want to be. I avoid talking about my weaknesses, instead focus on my strengths. For instance, I know I am overweight and out of shape, but when I began exercising and eating healthier food,  I began to get stronger, I began to lose weight, I began to lose inches, and I can do more repetitions than previously; so now when I journal about it, I focus on the good things I am doing and try to do even better with the next exercise or the next meal. I think you get my drift. Good habits will give good results! Bad habits will give bad results! If you want change, you have to go after it, therefore, change your way of thinking in order to make it a reality.

Ideas of Positive Affirmations

Make new connections to things you think about. For instance, when I used to think about a diet, I would think, I can’t eat my favorite foods, I’m going to starve, or I hate exercising. Now, my thoughts are different. I don’t call it a diet; I call it a way of life. I tell myself how important my health is to me, so I am able to be here for my kids and grandkids. There are so many other ways you can change your thought process to be more positive, but take one step at a time and start by changing your mindset.

My absolute favorite journal is by Daily Greatness. These journals will empower and inspire you to start your day with clear intentions. They are even available for business planning.

The PMDD Survival Kit

There is no one thing that takes PMDD away completely, although there are things that can help alleviate it and make the individual feel better. It’s always there, like a demon monster, just lingering in the background waiting for that one simple thing to set it off.

Each month, I have to fight this ugly demon! I can feel it creeping up on me, but just don’t know how to stop it. I try so hard, but I just don’t seem to be strong enough. One second I can be happy and laughing, then the next I’m in a fetal position crying my eyes out wanting to end it all. “What’s the matter, you ask?” The answer every time is “I don’t know,” and that’s the honest to God truth! Through the hopelessness, I reached for anything and everything that could make me feel better. I wanted nothing more than to be my happy, loving self.

I opted to stay away from medicines because it’s bad enough I have multiple daily meds to take for my asthma. Instead, I opted to put together a ‘No Medication’ survival kit.

1. Keep A Calendar

I can’t stress the importance enough to keep a calendar of your monthly cycles. It not only alerts you to when you can expect the monster to visit, but it’s also a great tool to share with your doctors. There are a number of different calendars you can use, but when tracking cycles and PMDD symptoms, I recommend Me vs PMDD.

2. Essential Oils

There are several essential oils that can help with mood and sleep (2 of the main things that’s missing during hell week).

A couple of my favorites include Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Lavendar, and Peppermint.

3. Meditation

Meditation is a great way to reduce stress and clear your head. I have this CD and love listening to the relaxing music, as it helps me focus and get rid of negative thoughts.

4. Journal

How many of you use a journal or diary? I do and I love it! I actually use a journal just like the one pictured. When you are able to write down your thoughts, you are able to see them more clearly and it allows you to deal with the emotions you may struggle with.

In addition to the things I listed above, I also include me time. It’s important to know when you need to remove yourself from others so you don’t say things you don’t mean. In addition, I take warm baths, exercise with Beach Body on Demand, eat healthy, watch a favorite movie, read a good book, do a craft with my circuit, and just keep myself busy so my mind doesn’t wander to scary places.
